How do I claim?

You can claim Universal Credit online

You can claim Universal Credit online –

Click on the green button that reads ‘Apply now’ to begin.

If you can claim, follow the steps outlined below.

Making a claim can take up to 30 minutes if you are making a single claim, and up to an hour for a couple claim.

What if I can’t get online?

If you don’t have access to a computer linked to the internet at home, then contact us to find out where you can go online.

There are a number of places where you can use a computer for free or access free Wi Fi to make your online claim, such as libraries and Jobcentre Plus offices.
See I need help for more information.

But note that in some places where you can use a computer there might not be anyone available to help you with the claim.

Make sure you don’t miss out

  • You can only receive an award of Universal Credit from the date you click the ‘submit claim’ button. This will only appear once you have completed all the information sections.
  • If you are claiming as a couple, then both of you will need to claim online and your award will start from the date both of you have clicked the ‘submit claim’ button.
See Claiming as a couple for more information.
  • If you are struggling to provide information for your claim – ask a Benefits Adviser, or contact us, as soon as you can.
  • If you are unable to make a claim online, contact the UC Helpline (0800 328 5644) and ask for help.

IMPORTANT: Universal Credit does not include help with your Council Tax bill. You must make a separate claim for Council Tax Support from your local council. There should be more details about this on your Council Tax bill.

Follow the steps below to make sure your claim is properly made and you get your first payment as quickly as possible

You’ll be asked a series of questions to help the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) work out if you’re eligible for Universal Credit and how much you could get. The claim is not complete until you have verified your identity, had a New Claim Interview, and agreed your claimant commitment.

If you are claiming as a couple, then you both have to complete all these steps separately and ensure your claims are joined with a partner code.
See Claiming as a couple for more information.
